Adoption Update

Due to rescue, work (the paying job!), and ailing parents, I am absent from the blog a lot lately.  I try to keep up on the blogs I follow (waiting for dinner - read a blog!), but don't always have time to post comments on the blogs or post updates.

The following cats have been adopted since the last update posted on the blog:

November 2 update
What an AMAZING weekend for the cats with eleven adoptions this weekend. The following were adopted: Marquee, Professor Plum, Juniper and Lavern (together), Leela, Amy Poehler, Jane Doe, Milo, Nefertiti, and Cheesesteak and Lark together.

November 9 update
A little slower of a week for kitty adoptions - but we're happy that two precious kitties were adopted this week. Sweet Bell was adopted on Monday and Zucchini was adopted today.

45 more kitties to find forever homes before year end in order to meet our goal of "forever homes for 75 cats before 2014"

And sometimes you must say no.

This was my personal Facebook post on Sunday evening.

As the weekend winds down and my migraine is getting progressively worse, my feelings and emotions this weekend have ranged from happy (that one of our kitties was adopted this week), to mainly horrified, sad, heartsick, and finally (still horrified, sad, and extremely heartsick) but absolutely beyond a doubt mad as hell.

Saying “no” is one of the really hard parts of rescue. I respond to many emails and phone calls each week where, unfortunately often the only response I can give is “no, I’m sorry, we cannot take the cat/kitten you found, we are at capacity” and then all I can offer is a courtesy posting and adding the cat(s)/kitten(s) to the wait list for our adoption program, or help with spay/neuter. Why? Because if you take in more cats that you can care for with a quality standard of care (nutritious food, clean water, sanitation [clean living environment], veterinary care, and loving care), then you have not truly rescued and you put all the animals in your care at risk.

I cry myself to sleep countless night each week because my heart feels like it’s breaking; because I have had to say no, I’m sorry, we are full right now. You want to help every cat and kitten in need, but you can’t – it’s not feasible. You can only help the ones you can properly care for, and as a result, you have to say no.

Alley Cats and Angels is not your typical cat rescue -- we have a broad range of programs that allows us to find the right solution for cats in various situations. In addition to our adoption program, we have a barn/garden cat program, a feral cat education and assistance/TNR program, and a low cost spay/neuter assistance program ("Alter an Alley Cat").

Sometimes you HAVE to

Sometimes intake closed means when an emergency arises, you find a place to put a couple little kittens because the consequences of not doing so will result in pain and suffering – and maybe slow death – in a kitten.

Approximately three weeks ago we just couldn't take in any more cats but some of the kittens in the one feral colony had severe eye issues (same colony as some of our other "eye kittens" this year, large TNR project is underway).  We couldn't take them in at the time but we were able to pay for a vet visit for the kittens.  A couple of them were doing better but Lisa sent me a picture of the kitten on Saturday and it was clear we had to take him/her in ASAP.  You could tell from the photo that the little (about 8-9 weeks) kitten's eye was about to rupture

We took the kitten in last night and had an appointment scheduled for today.  When I went to bed at 3:30 last night, she was resting comfortable but when I woke up at 6:30, it was bleeding and was worse than last night.  Our little emergency intake kitten had surgery to have her eye removed today. The bad news is, it might not be possible to save the other eye, but Dr. Teresa will do everything possible (working with Animal Eye Care as needed).  This darling angel feels so much better with that bad eye out.  She has a good appetite and chowed down her canned food this evening.

We did also take in her two siblings as we couldn't leave them.  One has an eye issue also and Dr. Teresa is speaking with Animal Eye Care.

Last night's kittens are the "space kittens" - Supernova, Lunar, and Orbit.   The Space Kittens came from the same colony as Juniper, Leela, Zoidberg, and Hattie McDoogal came from - all of them had eye issues.  Juniper and Leela both had eyes removed, Hattie McDoogal made a full recovery and Zoidberg is doing well but has very limited vision and a "white" covering over one eye  but Animal Eye Care was able to save the eye.

We can't save them all, but we can often save the ones with medical issues that no one else wants.  And sometimes that erases some of the heartache of not being able to help them all.

Adoption Update

October 6/7
Three adoptions the weekend of October 6/7: Mrs. Peacock (first of the "Clue" kitties to be adopted), Doc Holliday, and Ink. Ink was adopted by a previous adopter (who just happened to adopt two kittens that had the same foster mom!).
October 11
Four adoptions on Saturday, October 11th.   but the really big new is that three of them are adults! The following were adopted: Ironwood, Athena, and Jinx and Torque together. Fingers crossed for Torque - she's a sensitive kitty who doesn't do well if another cat bullies her, but we're all really hoping it works out, she's a very sweet girl.

Thank you!!
Thank you so very much to our adopters. And congratulations to the adopters and the kitties.

Based on our goal of 75 cats adopted before January 1, 2014, we have 68 more kitty adoptions to go.

75 cats before 2014

Calling all Cat Lovers!!! Alley Cats and Angels want to place 75 cats in their forever homes by the end of 2013! We need your help spreading the word! If you are not looking for a cat yourself, please share the photo with your friends and encourage them to do the same.

We are full up with cats and kittens, like many rescues right now. As a foster-home based rescue we have limited space to take in cats in need. If we can reach our goal then we can get back to making a difference in the lives of the forgotten felines. You can see most of our available cats at your Kitten Alley facebook page or via our website.

Alley Cats and Angels will be at the PetSmart in Knightdale this weekend Saturday & Sunday from 1p-4p. Stop by and see us!

We're at capacity

Alley Cats and Angels' foster homes are at capacity and we have several cats being returned due to severe allergies.  We've had more returns this year than before - I guess that happens the longer an organization has been around, the more cats you've adopted out.  Many of them due to loss of home, military deployment, etc.  Because of this, we have had to make the very hard decision to completely close intake and our wait list at this time. We have always been able to make an exception for dire circumstances, but we don't even have room for make those exceptions right now.   It is a heart wrenching decision.

If you can foster - please contact us at  If you are interested in adopting - please check out our great cats and kittens available for adoption - they are fully vetted.

Please help us continue to help the cats.  We urgently need foster homes and adoptive forever homes.  We also need people to please help spread the word about our organization.

Thank you.

Adoption Update

A little slow this weekend with two adoptions but it was a holiday weekend.  Camellia and The Great and Power Oz were adopted (not together).  Also, Nikita was adopted on Tuesday evening.   Congratulations to the kitties and their new families!

Tina Fey was returned due to the adopter's severe allergies.  Sometimes people react to some cats and not the others so the adopter is seeing an allergist this week and will try fostering a few kitties (one at a time) to see if there is one that her allergies can handle.  Such a nice person, we hope it works out.

Adoption Update (August 10/11 and August 17/18)

August 10/11
Last weekend (August 10/11) was a little slow for adoptions with only two adoptions - but what great adoptions they were!  Frittata was finally adopted after waiting her turn for almost a year.  And Little Rock - one of our special medical kittens - was adopted.  Woot, woot!!!

August 17/18
A pretty good weekend for the kitties.   Wingtip finally found her forever home.  She was the last of last year’s “Shoe kittens” – whose mom was even adopted before her.  Social networking played an incredible part in her adoption and a friend of her foster’s boss ended up adopting Wingtip.  Just goes to show, when you “share” on Facebook, it really does help!   Let the happy dancing commence!

Also adopted were Jules (yay – black kitten adopted on Black Cat Appreciation day!), Pablo, Mica, and Diego.

A big congratulations to the adopted kitties and their new families.  We’re so happy for you!

Here's Jules with his new mom and dad in celebration of Black Cat Appreciation Day.

Remember these kitties?

Remember the crazy day in June when I was out of town for work and came home to eight new rescue kittens and then received a request from a vet to help a kitten two days later?  Well, here's a little update!

The Eye Kittens
Well, Zapp Brannigan turned out to be a girl so has been renamed to Hattie McDougal - a female character on Futurma.  Hattie's eyes are fine - yay!  Leela had her surgery and is doing well - but oh boy, is she a fiesty one (see the little firecracker below!).  One of Zoidberg's eyes has cleared up completely but there are still major issues with the other one.  He is being treated by Animal Eye Care in Cary and is being treated with several medications but right now we are at the wait and see if it gets better in a few months mode.  :-(

Leela, the firecracker!

The Prison Kittens
The prison kittens are all doing well.  We named them after gunslingers.  We were originally going for an Outlaw theme, but couldn't come up with names for the ladies - not true female outlaws whose names people would recognize.  So they became: Butch Cassidy, Calamity Jane, Annie Oakley, Wyatt Earp, and Doc Holliday.  We have two health scares with them - one with Butch and one with Wyatt (about two weeks apart).  They became lethargic, not eating, with temperatures that were incredibly high (they were both in different foster homes).  In fact, Doc's temp was 105.6 when he was rushed to the vet.  Lots of cool compresses, fluids, antibiotics, steriods, etc. and hospitalization.  But they are all doing fine.  Testing and blood work did not show any cause for their illness.   Below are the Prison kittens several weeks after rescue.

Calamity Jane (left), Annie Oakley (back), and Butch Cassidy (right)

Doc Holliday (left) and Wyatt Earp (right)

The Vet Kitten
Devlin, the three legged kitten is doing pretty well.  He tends to scratch where his leg was removed, so we've been battling infection and lots of vet visits - the latest vet visit was Friday.  So he's now sporting clothing to keep him from scratching.  We looked at doggie tshirts or sweaters today at the pet store but he's a small guy, so our medical coordinator (who is currently fostering him due to his issue and her proximity to our vet) took a sock and cut it and he's swearing it as a "sweater".

Devlin one week after surgery

It's a crazy, crazy time!!

It's been approximately two weeks since I went to the corporate office of work for the paying job on a Monday and came home to 8 new kittens in my house!  Surprise!!!  :-)

The "Eye" Kittens
The first set are the Futurama kittens (Leela, Zapp Brannigan, and Zoidberg) who came from a feral cat situation where there were 11 kittens, 3 of which had extreme eye issues - they are about 8 weeks old.  No other groups wanted them, so we took the 3 with eye issues.  Immediate vet visit and the little girl was immediately scheduled for eye enucleation.  She's now doing great - so happy to be rid of that terrible eye, she's a a sweet little torbie.  The other two are male and black (we love black kitties!); of which one is doing much better and his eyes are completely fine now after the various medications.  The other little boy is just horrific, I've not really seen anything like that before.  He's been to the vet four times and has had consults with Animal Eye Care, he's been on so much medication (steriod eye drops and antibiotic eye drops - alternating every 6 hours, oral steriod, oral antibiotic, oral antiviral).  The eyes get better and then worse.  He is going to Animal Eye Care today - I hope they can save at least one eye.  We're not really set up for a blind cat but we'll make it work if that happens.

The Prison Kittens
So, I'm in Greensboro for work (about 1.5-1.75 hours away from home) and get a call and then text message from a prison guard that a feral mom has brought 5 babies up to the gates and left 2 of them there.  Another guard had grabbed the two kittens.  Fortunately Marie had taken vacation that week so first call was to Marie B so she could call Marie P (the one on vacation but not so great about answering her cell!) and ask her to get the kittens.  She headed to the prison and after a torrential downpour and standing water of more than an inch, she crawled through the water to get 2 more of the kittens that were in the bushes.  Gets them all set up at my house (I did get a call "I hope you at least get to break for lunch.  Where are your towels so I can dry these kittens and where do I put them?").  Later in the day, the guard called the first Marie because they had caught the last kitten.

Now, mama is feral as all get out, but 2 of these kittens were purry little love machines from the second we got them.  The other three hissed and spit and it was so funny because they were only about 3.5 weeks old.  I would syringe feed them and when I washed their faces, they would growl and bite the paper towel!

There are two calicos, two solid gray kittens, and one Siamese mix.  And oh are they ever messy!  They are the "Gunslinger kittens" (Annie Oakley, Calamity Jane, Doc Holliday, Wyatt Earp, and Butch Cassidy) but really right they they are the "poopslingers"!

Two weeks later, all five are super sweet and loving and purry and adore attention.  Another prison guard is foster the two calico girls and the Siamese mix and may possibly adopt the Siamese mix (Butch Cassidy). I still have Doc Holliday and Wyatt Earp at my house - they are the runts of the litter.

And yet another one!!
This past Wednesday, received a call from a vet tech at one of the local emergency vets.  A good samaritan had brought in a kitten with a rotten paw - necrotic tissue half way up the leg.  (WARNING - GROSS coming up).  It was covered in maggots. I knew - ewww, gross.... However, those maggots probably saved this little guy's life because they eat the bad tissue and kept the infection from becoming septic.  The vet said it looked like it had been that way for a while.  So I got him the next day (they tested him and gave him antibiotics and pain meds) and got him into our vet for leg amputation (more affordable at the vet we use).  The little guy had been on his own for a while because he's very thin under his fur and didn't have as much excess skin as most kittens do so his stitches aren't as "smooth" as the vet would have liked.  He's doing well.  Except for using the litter box - sigh....he's not quite grasped the hang of it yet.  He's about 9 weeks old.  I named him Devlin, which is Irish or Gaelic for "fierce courage", after what he's been through, he deserves that name.  However, he will get another name soon if he doesn't start using the litter box!!

Crazy Time
It's hard for me to post lately and I'm way behind on reading blogs and commenting on them as it's just crazy at work.  I finally talked work into interviewing the person that used to work for me at the last company because we need her.  We work so well together and our skills complement the other's skills really well.  *Fingers crossed*.  She can back me up on bids and RFPs but also work on documentation.  My backup on legal contracts is the attorney.  But if we can hire her, I can actually take some time off from work.  Even if I don't go anywhere, I need some time off!

Adoption Update

Eventful weekend for the kitties - five adoptions!

  • Peaches and Topeka were adopted together by a mother and daughter
  • Johnny was adopted (and she doesn't care if he sings loudly! – remember, he was adopted and then quickly returned because he’s loud)
  • Korsak was adopted
  • Blues (who was just returned due to an overly aggressive dog who thought Blues might make a tasty little snack) was adopted by one of our previous adopters.

Congratulations to the kitties and their new families.

Adoption update

It was a pretty good weekend for the kitties with five adoptions. Three kittens (Rhythm, Lulu, and Dorothy) were adopted. Also adopted this weekend are two cats over one year old quite shy kitties who celebrated their 1-year anniversary with Alley Cats and Angels by being adopted; those cats are Zipper (!!!!!) and Saffron (!!).

Congratulations to the kitties and their new families.
 Lulu is in good hands.

Rhythm is the center of attention.

Saffron is already hugging his new mom.

Zipper has a new brother to play with.
